I started quilting four years ago after moving to Kona, Hawaii, which hosts a vibrant quilting community. Before this I studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and before that worked for many years as a clinical psychologist.
I primarily do machine appliqué quilting using a wide assortment of textured materials.
My favorite subjects are landscapes and animals. I particularly enjoy putting together art memory quilts based loosely on customer photos.
For the past decade I have also been active with Basset hound rehoming (rescue) organizations, and make custom quilted pet portraits and Basset-themed quilts to benefit these organizations. You can see my work at www.vlbzwick.com

I love to depict people, animals, and places, in all the colors of the rainbow. I enjoy many media but fiber is my greatest love. Been making art quilts for more than twenty years. I love to share it with artists new and old.
I was recently featured on the SAQA website so you may know something about me. Those of you who attended the meeting at my studio have seen some of my work.
I have recently had work in several gallery shows in California, and two of my stained glass pieces will be at the IQA Long Beach show in the West Coast Wonders exhibit. This exhibit will also be at the Houston show, where my work will be in the SAQA Metaphors on Aging exhibit. Two of my pieces were pubished in Martha Sielman's book, People and Portraits.

Kathleen was born in Denver, Colorado. She attended Colorado State University, earning a BA in Art, majoring in Painting. For many years Kathleen was an art photographer, developing photographs in her color darkroom and working in her storefront studio. Her photographs have been displayed in galleries and invitational exhibits. They are included in private and corporate collections as well as in the Denver Art Museum.
When her children graduated from high school, Kathleen returned to her academic roots, earning a Psy.D. Degree from the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Professional Psychology and opening a private practice in Aurora, CO.
Upon retirement, she and her husband moved to Maui, where her grandchildren were growing up. A seamstress since childhood, Kathleen found that retirement afforded her a chance to express through her art her interest in sewing, painting, photography and psychology. Kathleen’s current quilts focus on the relationships between people. She hopes the viewer is intrigued with the “story” of the scene she paints. These machine-quilted scenes are derived from photos she takes. She paints them onto wholecloth Kona cotton, using acrylic inks thickened with aloe vera gel, often adding surface design elements to increase visual complexity, depth and texture.
Current or upcoming exhibitions that include her quilts:
SAQA--Metaphors on Aging
SAQA--Text Messages
Art Quilts Lowell--Tangled up in Blue
See Kathleen’s website for a list of selected local, national and international quilt shows that have exhibited her work, as well as publications containing photographs of her quilts.

Kailua-Kona, HII am a High School teacher at Kealakehe High School and a part time fiber artist. I started quilting when I moved to Hawaii 23 years ago. I like to take a piece of fabric and change it. Change it by layering colors, painting, piecing, appliqué, burning or whatever comes to my mind.
My inspiration is the colors I see around me when I'm on a trip or at home on the island of Hawaii. My designs are inspired by pictures I take or images in my mind. As I create my quilts they are projects in motion, always changing until the picture in my mind is close to the quilt on the wall.
This quilt is New Year 2013. My daughter was in the hospital for surgery on New Year’s Eve 2012. The day after her surgery we walked down the hall on the 7th floor and looked out the window an it was a beautiful clear blue sky that gave me hope.
